I woke up early, thinking something great is happening today. Me heart was lepping with excitement. I held me breath, waiting to remember what it was. Then it hit me. Yeah! Oh, Mammy! I’m going to be leaving today to live in the hostel and do me secretarial course. I leapt outa the bed and dived into me clothes. First, get me breakfast. Then I can sort meself out. I was flying out the door and galloping down the stairs, taking them two at a time. I flew open the door into the kitchen, giving the missus a fright.
‘Don’t be doing that to me! Jesus! I thought it was a herd a elephants tearing down them stairs.’
‘Oh, sorry, Missus Doherty!’ I laughed, seeing the shock on her face as she held her hand over her chest.
‘At my age yeh get used to the peace an quiet. What has put the skids under you anyway at this hour a the morning?’ she said, getting back to sorting out her shopping list.
‘I’m leaving to start living in the hostel and do me secretarial course!’ I gasped, feeling outa breath.
‘Well! Take yer time! Ye’ll get there soon enough without all the hurry on yeh!’ she muttered, opening presses to see what she needed.
‘Ah, no! I can’t wait to get going. Imagine, Missus Doherty! I’m going to be working in an office!’
‘Yeah! I suppose we’ll all be needin an appointment te see you! Ye’ll be that far gone up in the world!’ she said, still staring at her list.
‘Ah, no. I won’t be that high up. You have to work your way up first.’
‘Hmm. Most people would,’ she muttered. ‘But they haven’t met the like a you yet. Gawd help them!’ she said, raising her eyes to the ceiling. ‘If only the world knew what’s about te hit it!’
I stood with me mouth open, staring at her. I could see she was codding me, really wanting to laugh. But still an all, I’m not that bad!
‘Missus Doherty, why? What’s wrong with me?’ I said quietly. I didn’t like her saying that, even if she thought it was only a joke.
‘Ah, no, lovey! I didn’t mean any harm by what I said. I just mean you are . . . very lively! The lot in that hostel won’t know what hit them when you get there!’ she said, roaring her head laughing at the idea of me moving in to live with loads of other people.
‘Oh, right! Yeah, I see what you mean!’ I said, shaking me head up and down, thinking about it, but not really seeing anything at all. Because what’s in my mind is, I’m definitely going to become someone different. I will be real ladylike. Polite to everyone. And copy the other respectable young ones who don’t get themself into trouble. Because even though I’m forever getting into trouble – and I still haven’t figured out why that keeps happening to me – now I can make a fresh start! Nobody knows me yet.
